Mr. Fairchild was born in Chicago and grew up in Elkhart, Indiana. He graduated with honors from University of Indiana in 1941 where he was a member of Delta Upsilon social fraternity. Upon graduation, Jack entered the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Lieutenant. He was stationed in Norfolk, Virginia during WWII where he met and married Mary Payne Baldwin in 1945. The pair moved to Atlanta in 1952, where he worked in human resources for Colonial Stores for several years before founding his own insurance and estate planning business, Fairchild & Co. Jack received his J.D. from Atlanta Law School. Jack was involved in many organizations including the American Legion Post 134 where he was a past commander; the Piedmont Driving Club where he was a member for over 30 years; and The Cathedral of St. Philip where he served on the finance committee until 2011. His many interests included travel, sailing, poker, parties, and Knoxi's annual Dance Weekend at the Cloister. But Jack's greatest joy was spending time with his family. The highlight of his year was the annual family beach vacation. Jack is predeceased by his wife, Mary Payne Baldwin Fairchild and son, Ludwell Baldwin Fairchild. He is survived by his sons Jack Clinton Fairchild, Jr. and wife Barbara B. Fairchild of Atlanta; Inman Payne Fairchild and wife Carolyn S. Fairchild of Cartersville; daughter-in-law Kathy B. Fairchild of Marietta; grandchildren Jessica B. Fairchild and husband Peter Rached; Alex Inman Fairchild, Clinton Reese Fairchild, Mary Lawton Fairchild Delchamps and husband David Curtis Delchamps; Ludwell Baldwin Fairchild, Jr. and wife Cori K. Fairchild of Virginia; Lee Ferguson Fairchild of New York City; great-grandchildren Noah Baldwin Fairchild and Luke Franklin Fairchild. Arrangements are being handled by H.M. Patterson Funeral Home, Spring Hill. Visitation will be held at the funeral home Tuesday, November 5th, from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Memorial service will be held at The Cathedral of St. Philip at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, November 6th, officiated by the Very Rev. Sam Candler, Dean. A graveside service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, VA. Arrangements in Norfolk will be handled by H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartment. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to The Cathedral of St. Philip, 2744 Peachtree Road, N.W., Atlanta, GA 30305. .
