Philip F. Farrell, 78, of the 300 block of E. Gilpin Ave., a retired Catholic priest, died March 16, 1991, in a Norfolk hospital. Father Farrell, a native of Providence, R.I., was ordained a priest in 1940. He served in the Richmond Diocese from December 1951 until his retirement. He had served as assistant pastor at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Alexandria; St. Paul's Catholic Church, Portsmouth; Holy Trinity Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church, both in Norfolk; and St. Matthew's Catholic Church, Virginia Beach. And he served as pastor of churches in Berkeley Springs, W.Va., Winchester, Va., Hopewell and Franklin, Va. He also served as deaneries moderator of Council of Catholic Women in Alexandria and Arlington. He helped establish the Christian Family Movement in Alexandria and Young Catholic Adults clubs in Northern Virginia. Father Farrell was a chaplain of the Newman Club at the College of William and Mary. He served as chaplain at Eastern State Hospital, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and the Ryan Club of Norfolk since 1968. He was also the Catholic port chaplain for the Port of Norfolk, Hampton Roads Harbor, for seven years. He celebrated his Jubilee Mass of 50 years in the priesthood April 22, 1990, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Holy Trinity Catholic Church by the Rev. David Foley. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. A Christian wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the church. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk, is handling arrangements.
