Ferebee Sr. of Virginia Beach died Feb. 28, 2010. He lead a full life centered around his family, his business and his church. He was the son of Oscar Benson Ferebee Sr. and Florence Swingley Ferebee. Born in Norfolk, Sept. 14, 1929, he graduated from Maury High School in 1947 after which he studied two years at the Norfolk division of The College of William & Mary, which later became Old Dominion University. He then attended two years at the University of Virginia, 1949-1950. He enlisted in 1950 in the U.S. Air Force and graduated from flight school as a pilot with rank of second lieutenant in March 1952. He then graduated from Combat Gunnery School Nellis AFB Las Vegas, Nev. He left for Korean combat tour of duty Sept. 1952, flying the F-80 Shooting Star, the F86 Sabre Jet and the Texan T-6 in the Mosquito Squadron, directing fighter bomber strikes. After this, he returned to Greenville, Miss., in 1953 as a flight instructor in T-33 Jets and the T-28. Then in March 1955, he became an agent with Equitable Life until 1970. From 1970-1974, he became a personal producing general agent with Provident Life and Accident, then from 1974 to present with Connecticut Mutual now MassMutual. In April 1958, he married Anne Meredith Stewart of Portsmouth, and had four children, John Terrell, Harry Stewart, Anne Brandon and Christopher Swingley. In April 1965 he committed his life to Christ. Over the years, he had served on The Official Board of Ghent United Methodist Church and was, for a time, president of the Methodist Men's Club, vice president and treasurer. Also, he was president of the Northside Norfolk Rotary Club, member Norfolk Life Underwriters Association, member of Board of the Norfolk Seamans Friend Society and Proclaim, member of the American Legion Post 35, and past member of the Norfolk Boat Club and the Harbor Club. He was a member of St. John's Anglican Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Meredith; his well-loved children, John Terrell, Harry Stewart, Anne Brandon and Christopher Swingley; his brother, Oscar B. Ferebee and sister, Anne Ferebee; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be held Saturday, March 6, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Ferebee plot in Elmwood Cemetery with Father Robert Whitaker officiating. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life at Steinhilber's in Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a charity of one's choosing. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, is handling arrangements.
