All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Diane Renfrow dianel14@gmail.com July 24, 2017, 2:44 pm Norfolk Journal and Guide, Oct 8,1980 Washington - Funeral services were held for Dr. Dorothy Boulding Ferebee, who passed in a Washington Hospital at Andrew Rankin Memorial Chapel, Howard University, Washington, Sept. 20, at 11 a.m. The eulogy was given by the Honorable Patricia Harris, Secretary, Department of Health and Human Resources. Dr. Evans E. Crawford, Dean of Rankin Chapel, gave the invocation and benediction, and Father John E. Wilbur, rector, of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church also participated in the service. Paying tribute to the deceased were Dr. Barbara Phillips, supreme basileus of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Dr. Ferebee, was a former AKA supreme basileus; and Dr. Dorothy Height, president of the National Council of Negro Women of which Dr. Ferebee succeeded the late Mrs. Mary McLeod Bethune as president. Interment was private. Dr. Ferebee, a retired member of the medical faculty of Howard University, was born in Norfolk, but grew up in Boston. She graduated from Simmons College there and earned her medical degree at Tufts University in 1924. After finishing her training she became an instructor at Howard Medical School and remained there for 40 years. She later served as medical director of the Howard University Health Service. At the time of her retirement in 1968 she was director of university health activities. Dr. Ferebee was widely noted in Washington and all over the country for her efforts in behalf of blacks, women, and disadvantaged persons. Dr. Ferebee was a member of the Board of Trustees of Simmons College, Boston, a visiting lecturer of Preventive Medicine, Tufts Medical School, Boston. She served on numerous boards and was medical consultant to the U. S. Department of State and Peace Corps. She also received many honors and citations. Survivors include a son, Dr. Claude T. Ferebee, a dentist who lives in Chevy Chase, MD., and four grandchildren.
