Ferebee, 89, passed away on Friday, June 18, 2021, at her home in New York with her son by her side. A journalist, author and historian, Ann's life took her around the world in pursuit of people with new ideas. Born in Norfolk, Va., Ann attended courses at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary before moving to New York City where she graduated from Barnard College. At Barnard she studied American literature but also nurtured budding interests in photography and design history. Upon graduation Ann joined Time, Inc. as a researcher while studying at the Institute of Fine Art. She taught design history at the Pratt Institute. She started the magazine, Design and Environment, and was its editor-in-chief. She authored A History of Design from the Victorian Era to the Present, published in 1970, with a second edition published in 2011. She also taught at the Parsons School of Design. Ann founded The Institute for Urban Design in 1979, and served as its director until 2004. Conceived as a multi-disciplinary forum for the emerging field of city planning, The Institute brought together architects, designers, landscape architects, engineers, transportation planners, sociologists, anthropologists and artists at the forefront of city planning and urban design. The Institute organized urban design forums and symposia around the world in cities such as Berlin, Paris and St. Petersburg. Through her work, Ann interviewed numerous artists and intellectuals, including Andy Warhol, James Baldwin and Marshall McLuhan. She traveled extensively abroad, meeting old friends and tracking new developments in art and design. Raised in the Ghent neighborhood of Norfolk with her brothers whom she adored, Ann was the daughter of the late Florence and Oscar B. Ferebee, Sr. She is survived by her son, John S. Ferebee and her partner, Suzanne B. Clarke. A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 2nd in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk. Arrangements are being handled through H.
