Stewart, sister of the late Barbara Preston Eckert and widow of John T. Ferebee, Sr. and beloved mother of her four children, John Terrell Ferebee, Harry Stewart Ferebee, Anne Brandon Ferebee, Christopher Swingley Ferebee and daughter-in-law Lindsey (Rowe) Ferebee, passed away peacefully in her home at the age of 90, surrounded by her loving family on Dec. 23, 2020. Meredith was born in Buchanan, VA, on Aug. 30, 1931, to two loving parents (her father a first-generation Scotsman) who were teachers with a deep love of nature and literature. All her life, Meredith was an avid reader and lover of books. After attending Mary Washington College for a year, she transferred to William & Mary and graduated in 1952. Thereafter, she worked towards a Masters Degree at the University of Minnesota. She went on to teach elementary school in Portsmouth, VA for six years before meeting the love of her life, John T. Ferebee, Sr. They married in 1958 and had four children. She was a devoted, loving wife and mother who loved literature and art and instilled that love in her children. She was also a poet and writer in her own right, having poems published locally and nationally. Over the years she participated in her church Christmas choral and the altar guild, which she enjoyed very much. Her husband and children were her life's work and true joy. A private family service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a donation to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
