Born in Monroe, N.C., she was the daughter of William A. and Bessie L. Redfern. She attended Norfolk public schools and Sweet Briar College where she graduated cum laude with a major in English. She taught French a year at Garrison-Williams School in Norfolk, then worked for Colonial Williamsburg as a hostess in the restored buildings while her husband, Finlay F. Ferguson was an architect with the restoration. She came to work with The Virginian-Pilot's women's page in 1958 and then edited the book page from 1959 to 1966. Among civic activities, she was president of the Children's Theater and vice president of the Junior League, where she was honored as a volunteer for the year. She also worked with the Norfolk Little Theater and the Norfolk Society of Arts and as lecture chairman of the Irene Leache Memorial Foundation. She was a member of the boards of the Day Nursery and St. Mary's Infant Home. She was active in the Altar Guild at the Church of the Good Shepherd. Mrs. Ferguson is survived by a daughter, Anne Stuart Cantile of Richmond and a sister, Margaret Redfern of Norfolk, and two granddaughters. The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Ross Wright. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. H.D.
