Norfolk Virginian Pilot Sunday December 28, 1952
Mrs. Maria J. Fernandes, 90, died at the residence of her daughter and son, Miss 
Anna Fernandes and Frank Fernandes, 530 New Jersey Avenue, Colonial Place, 
yesterday at 8:55 a.m., after an illness of three months.  She was the widow of 
Joseph A. Fernandes.
She was a native of Madeira Island, Portugal and had been a resident of Norfolk 
for 38 years. 
Surviving her, in addition to Miss Fernandes and her son, Frank, with whom she 
made her home, are five other sons, Pedro and Lenn Fernandes, both of Norfolk; 
Joseph A. Fernandes, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Mario Fernandes, of Portsmouth and 
Manuel Fernandes, of Elmont, Long Island, N.Y.; eight grandchildren and five 
great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home today at 2 p.m. by 
the Rev. Muse Foster.  Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery.
