VIRGINIA BEACH - Mary Smith Ferris, 82, went to be with the Lord Sept. 22, 2007.

She was born Nov. 18, 1924, in Norfolk to the late Cecil C. and Elizabeth Wylie 
Smith. Mary graduated from the DePaul School of Nursing, was a member of Church of 
The Ascension Catholic Church and the Rainbows. Mary loved playing bingo, the 
slots in Atlantic City, Dover, Del., and Las Vegas and traveling. Mary was 
preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Burkett.

Left to cherish her memory are her "sister-in-law," Sue Athanas and husband Phil 
of Virginia Beach; cousins, Isabel Schell of Virginia Beach, Matilda M. Marronzino 
of Denver, Mary Margaret Pugliese of Florida, John A. Boylan of Hampton, Bonnie 
Dyal of Suffolk, Michiel Boyland and Mildred Dowdy of Norfolk; niece, Angela 
Burkett-Taylor and husband Avery and sons Brady and Cole of McKinney, Texas; 
nephew, Thomas Wesley Burkett Jr. and wife Heidi and daughter, Caitlyn of Wake 
Forest, N.C.; special friends, John and Faye Whitehead of Virginia Beach, as well 
as other loving nieces, nephews and friends.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Church of The 
Ascension Catholic Church in Virginia Beach. Burial will follow in Saint Mary's 
Catholic Cemetery on Granby Street in Norfolk. The family will receive friends in 
Smith and Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, today from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer 
Society, 4416 Expressway Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. You may offer
