Filer, 77, died Sunday, April 24, 2011, in Norfolk. A native of Miami, he was a son of the late Samuel Robert Carol and Margaret Hoagland Filer. Bob was a member of Christ the Redeemer Anglican Church and former member of The Church of the Good Shepherd, where he served two terms as a member of the Vestry, chair of the Evangelism Committee and a director of the Alpha program. He was a board member and a volunteer of more than 20 years with Lee's Friends from 1987-2010 and was honored for his volunteer efforts with Lee's Friends, a board member of the Hampton Roads United Christians from 1993-1994 including Life Focus '93, Board member of Providence Bible College from 1995 to present and a Board member of the Canterbury Center for Episcopal Campus Ministry at Old Dominion University, including Chairman of the Board from 2003-2005. He was a 1951 graduate of Maury High School, 1955 graduate of Virginia Military Institute, Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2002 from Providence Bible College and Theological Seminary. Bob was a distinguished military graduate at VMI where he served on the Honor Court for three years and was the first vice president of the Honor Court during his senior year as well as serving as president of the VMI Glee Club during the same year. Upon graduation from VMI, Bob was inducted into the Beta Commission of Kappa Alpha Order at Washington and Lee University. He retired as president of a subsidiary of Union Carbide after 28 years and as president and chief financial officer of Providence Bible College and Theological Seminary after 15 years. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty DuVal Filer, a stepdaughter, Lee Harkins and a brother, Stanley Wilson Filer. He is survived by his wife, Emily Symington Harkins Filer; daughters, Mary Wilson Pross, Elizabeth DuVal Filer and Anne Filer Vogt; stepson, Montgomery Fox Harkins; and grandchildren, Janice and Kaitlyn and Ruth Postlewaite. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 29, at The Church of the Good Shepherd by the Rev. Robert Davenport.
