A native of Baltimore, he had lived here since 1903. He retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard in 1948 and was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus and a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 367. He was a member of Ocean Park Volunteer Fire Department. He is survived by three sons, the Most Rev. J. L. Flaherty, auxiliary to the bishop of Richmond of the Catholic Diocese of Richmond, Charles E. Flaherty Jr. of Virginia Beach, and Leo F. Flaherty of Norfolk; two sisters, Mrs. Helen Dressel and Mrs. Mary Lynch of Baltimore; a brother, Robert Flaherty of Van Nuys, Calif.; and eight grandchildren. The body was taken from H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to 143 Cherry St. It will be brought back to the funeral home today at 4 p.m. for the recitation of the Rosary at 7:30. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated in St. Pius X Catholic Church Monday at noon. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that masses be offered.
