Louis Flaherty, 65, recently retired auxiliary bishop of the Catholic Diocese in Richmond, died Saturday in De Paul Hospital. A former pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Norfolk, Bishop Flaherty announced, when he retired in March, that he was suffering from lung cancer. He was appointed auxiliary bishop in 1966. A Norfolk native, he served as superintendent of schools for the diocese and served churches in Richmond, McLean, and Roanoke before being appointed pastor of Blessed Sacrament in 1971. He attended St. Mary’s Male Academy at Norfolk’s St. Mary’s Church, Blair Junior High School, and Maury High School. As an Army chaplain with the 1st Armored Division in Italy, he went to the aid of wounded and dying men under fire. His warm, easy-going manner allowed him to make friends with children quickly, and the affection was mutual.
