Thomas Fleury, an old and highly respected citizen, and for many years a minister of the gospel, died at his home on Cumberland Street yesterday morning. Mr. Fleury was a native of North Carolina, but had resided in Norfolk for many years. He was over 80 years old and a devout member of the Granby Street M.E. Church, from which his funeral will take place at 3 o'clock this afternoon. *************************************************************************** The funeral of Rev. Thomas D. Fleury took place from the Granby Street M.E. Church Sunday afternoon, and was attended by a large number of friends. Rev. Mr. Tudor conducted the services, delivering an appropriate sermon for the occasion. At the conclusion of his remarks Rev. Dr. A.G. Brown, pastor of the Cumberland Street M.E. Church, and Rev. William McGee, of McKendree M.E. Church, Brambleton, paid glowing tributes to the deceased divine. The remains were interred in Elmwood Cemetery, the following gentlemen acting as pallbearers: Messrs. B.T. Bockover, William R. Rowe, E.J. Griffith, John B. LeKies, R.E. White, Joseph C. Norsworthy, M.L.T. Davis, Joseph G. Watts, William J. Veasey and C.W. Buckingham. Fleury, who died December 2, 1887, have lately interested themselves in securing a tombstone to mark the spot where his remains are and yesterday placed it in position at the head of his grave in Elmwood Cemetery. The following appropriate inscription in keeping with his Christian character is inscribed on the stone.- "In commemoration of his upright and holy life."
