P. (MICKEY) FLYNN, 75, EX-POLICE SERGEANT, DIES Frederick Peter (Mickey) Flynn, Irish born mainstay of the Norfolk Police Division's Identification Bureau for 28 years until his retirement in 1950, died Thursday at 11 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital. He was 75. Before becoming a policeman he taught grammar school and junior classes in Maryland. He held a bachelor of science degree from LaSalle College. During World (War) I he headed a Civil Service committee at the old Army Base to welcome returning veterans to Norfolk. With redeployment over, he turned to police work, joining the force Nov. 15, 1921, as a patrolman. Affectionately known as Mickey, he pounded a beat a year, but in 1922 transferred to a desk job in the Identification Bureau. There he remained until retirement with rank of detective sergeant. ASSISTED CAPTURES Although he considered desk work a handicap, Mickey played an active role in numerous criminal captures with his records on known lawbreakers. Early in 1955 he was appointed a justice of the peace by Judge H. Lawrence Bullock of Corporation Court. A resident of Norfolk since his youth, he lately resided at 810 Redgate Ave. He was born Jan 8, 1885 in Newton Forbes, Langford County, Ireland, 80 miles west of Dublin on the River Shannon. He was the seventh son of a family of eight children, only one of them a girl, Miss Elizabeth Flynn of Dublin, his only survivor. Both of his parents, John Flynn and Mrs. Margaret Donahue Flynn were schoolteachers. They planned to send Mickey to Oxford University, but this went awry when he finished the last public grade. (ninth) LANDED IN 1899 Then came a chance to come to America and finish his schooling in Maryland. He landed in the United States in September 1899 and finished his education, culminated with a teaching stint of 11 years in Maryland schools. His Civil Service duties in World War I brought him to Norfolk to stay. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A funeral service will be held at H.D.
