Peggy was born in 1940 in Newport News, Virginia to August and Margaret Penzold, the first of five daughters. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert (Bob) and their three children: Robert Penzold Fooks (Ana) of Annapolis, MD, William Baylor Fooks (Helen) of Charlottesville, VA, and Laura Stuart White (Layton) of Norfolk, VA and grandchildren: Phoebe Anne Fooks of Denver, CO, Stuart Bingham Fooks of Richmond, VA, William Bennett White and Campbell Carr White of Norfolk, VA. She was also blessed with four bonus grandchildren: Wyeth Ward, Cyrus Ward and Brooks Ward of Charlottesville, VA and Andrew Pendleton of Annapolis, MD. She is also survived by four sisters: Phoebe Zarnegar (Bizhan) of Richmond, VA, Laura Derrickson of Indianapolis, IN, Polly Pinelo (Armando) of Ponte Vedra, FL and Atlee Gill (Ralph) of Williamsburg, VA along with numerous nieces and nephews. Being a Marine "Brat", Peggy moved multiple times during her childhood. At age two she and her mother were Pearl Harbor survivors and were evacuated as military dependents from Honolulu to San Francisco abroad the SS Lurline. She was valedictorian of her high school class in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba Naval Base and went on to graduate from Mary Baldwin College in 1961 where she was president of her senior class. Peggy was an accomplished seamstress, gardener and an exceptional organizer. Through the years she had several jobs in Norfolk which led to many enduring treasured friendships: teaching English classes to the men in the brig at the Norfolk Naval Base, working on the WHRO Great TV Auction, years as the volunteer coordinator at the Cousteau Society and sewing for decorator John Bayne. She enjoyed her memberships in the Norfolk Virginia Beach Junior League, McDowell Circle of CHKD, Redwood Garden Club and The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. She became the matriarch of the family, keeping the family together by planning beach vacations every summer, creating family albums and organizing numerous family dinners. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. A graveside service will be held Saturday, September 18th at 11:00 at Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.
