Peele yesterday morning saw her twelve-year-old son, Garland Forbes, crushed to death beneath the wheels of a Norfolk and Western locomotive. The accident occurred about 10 o'clock. Mrs. Peele, who lives in South Norfolk, near the tracks of the Norfolk and Western Railway, sent Garland to Lawrence's grocery on the opposite side of the tracks. Two trains were approaching in opposite directions but the boy did not see but one. He waited until one train had passed, then he started across the track. He was caught by the second train, his body badly mangled beneath the locomotive and dragged for about fifty feet. The mother, helpless to aid her boy, was the horrified and only witness of the sad accident. Acting Coroner Poindexter and a jury held an inquest and rendered a verdict of accidental killing. The jury was composed of J.L. Warden, C.P. Rogers, Joseph Hutchings, Rev. R.B. Scott, J.R. Sturges, W.J. Burkett and W.T. Sawyer. Walter Peele, the boy's stepfather, is employed at Colonna's Marine Railway. Additional Comments: Magnolia According to tombstone the child was 9 yrs. 9mo. and 4 days old.
