She was retired from Dillard Paper Company as an Executive Secretary. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Louise Stanfield, and was the widow of Oscar Ellis Forbes, Sr. Sarah was a graduate of Maury High School, and was a longtime member of Ghent United Methodist Church. At the church, she sang in the choir, was pianist for the Men's Bible Class, and was a volunteer with her sister, Fannie, at the Church Pre-school for many years. She was also a member of Ghent United Methodist Women. Left to cherish her memory is her son, Oscar Ellis Forbes, Jr. and his wife, Brenda of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Fannie Steinfield and Laura Griffin and her husband, Peter all of Norfolk; two brothers, Larry Stanfield and his wife, Anne of Norfolk and Phillip Steinfield and his wife, Betty of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Grace Leigh Forbes, Kathryne G. Ripley and husband, Matt, Billy Gresham and wife, Laura, and Tommy and Charlie Gresham; and two great grandchildren, Matthew Ripley and Sarah Kathryne Ripley. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sarah E. Forbes Gresham and sister Doris Ann Weddle. The family would like to sincerely thank Dr. Charles Lisner and his staff and the staff at Harbor's Edge for their loving care of Sarah. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 10 in Ghent United Methodist Church with Rev. Melody Tanner officiating, with reception following. Graveside will be private before the service. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Wednesday evening from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m. at the Norfolk Chapel of H. D. Oliver Funeral on Colonial Ave.. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to a charity of your choice. Online condolences may be offered to the family through www.hdoliver.com.
