S. FORREST, ESQ. - It is with feelings of sorrow that we announce the death of W. S. Forrest, Esq., an old and highly-esteemed citizen of Norfolk, which mournful event occurred about 4 o'clock yesterday morning, at his residence, just outside the city limits. Mr. Forrest, who was in the 62d year of his age, was born near Nimmo's church, Princess Anne county, and came to this city in early life, where he embarked in mercantile pursuits, which he followed for several years. He afterwards went to teaching, and for some time conducted a flourishing school. Upon relinquishing this profession, he became connected with the press of Norfolk, first as city editor of the Southern Argus, and afterwards, as business manager of the Old Dominion. He continued in this business for a number of years and performed the duties of both positions with ability. He finally quit the newspaper business and was, for a number of years, engaged as a real estate agent. About three or four years since, failing health compelled him to retire from business and after that he seldom appeared among his fellow-citizens. He remained in Norfolk during the terrible yellow fever scourge of 1855 and afterwards wrote and published a truthful and thrilling history of those dark and sorrow-laden days. He was also the author of an authentic and interesting history of Norfolk, dating back to the first settlement. Copies of this work are now scarce and therefore command a good price. Mr. Forrest was for forty years a member of the Cumberland Street M. E. church, and had held at different times the official positions of trustee, steward, class-leader and Sunday school superintendent. He was a consistent Christian, a kind husband and father and a good citizen. To his afflicted family and friends we tender our heartfelt sympathies. His funeral will take place from the Cumberland Street M. E. church this afternoon at 3:30 o'clock.
