Norfolk Virginian July 10, 1877
Saturday last at about 12 1/2 o'clock, Mrs. Maria C. Fortune, who was lying down 
in the upper story of her residence, No. 38 Moseley street, heard a knocking at 
the front door of the house and attempted to go down to open the same. On reaching 
the top of the stairs leading from the first to the second floor, she tripped and 
fell to the bottom, the fall breaking her neck and causing her almost instant 
death. Dr. Jas. D. Galt, coroner, was notified and, on Sunday morning, an inquest 
was held over the body, the jury returning a verdict to the effect that the 
deceased came to her death by accidentally falling down a flight of stairs and 
breaking her neck.
