Mr. Foster was born in Norfolk on Aug. 29, 1922, to Lewis Allen Foster and Margaret Shipp Foster. He was graduated from Maury High School and attended the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. He entered the University of Virginia in 1941 where he lived on The Lawn, then left to enlist in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in 1943. He served as a liaison between American and French forces during the liberation of southern France and for the duration of the war and in 1945 was awarded the Croix de Guerre by the French government. Following the end of World War II, Mr. Foster worked in France with the newly developing United States Information Service and at the United Nations Headquarters in Paris. He returned to finish his degree in economics at the University of Virginia, where he also received his masters degree in modern languages. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at the University of Lyon, France and attended the University of Paris where he began his study of philosophy. Mr. Foster studied for his Ph.D. in philosophy at the University of Virginia, then taught at Mary Washington College in 1955-56. He began teaching at the College of William and Mary in 1956 and stayed until retirement in 1984, during which time he earned his Ph.D. at the University of Udaipur in Rajasthan, India, where he taught philosophy and French in 1970-71. During the Korean Action, Mr. Foster received a direct commission in the U.S. Navy and served as a Naval Intelligence Reserve Officer, retiring after 27 years with the rank of commander. Mr. Foster was an avid tennis player, biker and traveler. He was a member of St. Martin's Episcopal Church and the owner of Reliable Home & Pet Sitting Services. His personal approach to life was "to make two people laugh today." He truly treasured his time at "The University" and his opportunity to room on The Lawn. He is survived by a daughter, Andrea Foster Deagle and son-in-law, Douglas and grandson, William Wallace of James City County; a son, Lewis Allen Foster III of Williamsburg; a sister, Jean Frances Foster Harris of Newport News; four nephews; his loving companion, Priscilla Nystrom; and his former wife, Anna Grace Foster. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. in St. Martins Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Martin's Church, 1333 Jamestown Road, Williamsburg, VA 23185.
