FRANCIS Sudden Demise of a Well Known and Prominent Gentleman The city was shocked yesterday by the news of the sudden death of Mr. Jefferson Thomas Francis, deputy collector in the office of City Collector Baker, in the city market building. Though he had been indisposed for some time, Mr. Francis had not been detained from work and nothing serious was anticipated. There was not the slightest reason to suspect that the indisposition, which even Mr. Francis thought lightly of, would terminate fatally. He was at his office Thursday as usual and went home at 8 o'clock that night. He did not eat supper, but telling his wife he was very unwell, retired. Mrs. Francis, becoming alarmed, sent for Dr. Herbert Nash, who arrived at 9:30 p.m. and found the sick man unconscious and in a very critical condition. Dr. Frank Walke and Dr.Groves were called in, the latter remaining with the patient all night. Dr. Leigh was summoned in the morning, but the skill of these clever medical men was powerless to stay the approach of death, which all recognized as inevitable. Mr. Francis regained consciousness about 8 o'clock for a short while, and died a few minutes after 9. The funeral will take place at 4 o'clock today from Epworth M.E. Church, the burial to follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The pallbearers selected are: Messrs. James Riddle, William L. Baker, Captain W.W. Dey, Alex. J. Savage, T.A. Jones, Lee Pender, E.T. Atkinson, Victor Parke, Frank E. Willcox and Frank Dancy. The flag on the City Hall has been placed at half mast out of respect to the deceased. The deceased came here from Southampton County about fifteen years ago as a bookkeeper for the late W.H. Smith and later he was employed in the same capacity by Savage, Son & Co., cotton brokers. Then he was made deputy city collector by Mr. Baker. He was 36 years of age and leaves a wife, who is the eldest daughter of Colonel C. A. Nash, and also two young children. Mr. Francis was a man of fine standing in the city and was known by his friends, among whom he was very popular, as a man of undoubted integrity, honor and splendid business qualifications. He was a loving father, a devoted husband and staunch friend.
