Salvatore was a first generation Italian- American, born in the house his father, Fortunato, built in Brewster, Ohio, after immigrating to the United States in 1920 to work for the railroad company. "Salvatore" means "savior" and he truly embodied this with his open heart and selfless help offered to anyone whose path he crossed. His Italian family always called him “Quinto” as he was the fifth (and youngest) born in his family. Quinto had an adventurous spirit, always enjoying the exploration of something new. He served in the Army for three years where he earned the nickname Sam when his sergeant could not pronounce his hearty Italian name. Sam then took a job with Paige Communications so he could continue to travel the world and experience the culture and community that he cherished so much. It was while working in Turkey that he met the love of his life, Tuzim Keresteci, marrying her at the Istanbul Hilton in April 1968. Together they raised three beautiful daughters - Rose (Mike), Amber (Chris), and Mona along with six grandchildren - Dana (Joe), Sean, Ashley, Kaitlyn (Dakota), Allison, and Morgan. Sam lived a humble life full of love, always focused on his family and his faith while inspiring the same in those he met. He would remind us to ‘always be gentle’ and consistently put the needs of others ahead of self. No one was a stranger to Sam! God placed in Sam’s heart a very special connection with animals and a call to serve the marginalized in our community. No one fell outside the mantle of Sam’s prayers and unconditional love. Our wonderful father’s spirit lives on in each of our hearts and for that we are grateful!
