Freeman Some days since brief local mention was made of the fact that Mr. J.M. Freeman, an old and highly respected citizen of this city, had met with a severe fall, since which time his condition had been considered extremely critical. His death took place at his residence, No. 12 Grace street, at 11:15 yesterday morning. Mr. Freeman was a native and a lifelong resident of Norfolk. He was in the 77th year of his age, having been known nearly all his life as a prominent jeweler. He was a consistent Christian and in his long life had been the agent of much good. Mr. Freeman was born September 23d, 1806. He married in this city in 1831 and entered business the same year. During the civil war, while his five sons were in the Confederate army, he closed his business rather than take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government. He was a member of the old Norfolk Juniors and for some years held the rank of first lieutenant in that fine command when Mr. Cincinnatus Newton was its captain. He extended a helping hand to the struggling refugees and during his fifty years identification with the city was a friend to all in need. At the time of and for many years prior to his death he was a member in good standing of Norfolk Lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M. and was intimately acquainted with much of the old history of this city, with which later generations are unfamiliar. Mr. Freeman's funeral will take place today from the Second Presbyterian Church.
