ROBERT FREEMAN One of Norfolk's Oldest and Most Highly Respected Citizens Captain Robert Freeman, aged 62 years, an old resident of Norfolk, having lived here all of his life, died yesterday morning at 5:45 o'clock. The funeral will be this morning at 10 o'clock from Christ Episcopal Church. The remains will be privately interred. Captain Freeman was born in Norfolk in 1842 and was the fourth son of Joseph M. Freeman. He is survived by one brother, Arthur C. Freeman and three sisters, Mrs. Julia Comstock, of New Orleans, Mrs. William Hanes, of Chicago and Mrs. Clara Pelot, of Elizabeth, N.J. Deceased entered the service of the Confederate Army at the age of 19, joining the Cadet Riflemen of Charleston, S.C. He was then engaged in the cotton business. When his native state seceded he returned to Norfolk and enlisted in Company F of the Sixth Virginia and Mahones brigade. He served until the Battle of Gettysburg in which he was captured. He was transferred to Point Lockout and later exchanged as a prisoner of war. On returning to Norfolk he was made an officer in the Confederate Navy and was ordered to the ram Albemarle and was with that craft in all of the engagements in which it participated until it was blown up by the Cushing. He was then ordered to Wilmington, where he remained until the evacuation and surrender. He returned to Norfolk, engaged in the jewelry business and organized the Norfolk City Guards, being made captain of the organization. Captain Freeman was one of Norfolk's oldest and best known citizens. He had the respect of the community. He was prominent for some time in local politics and figured during the reconstruction days.
