Born in Norfolk, he had retired in 1992 as foreman in the Department of General Services for the town of Hempstead, N.Y., after 20 years of service. He also worked for the U.S. Postal Service in Norfolk and New York for 20 years. He was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, and a former member of Mount Sinai Baptist Church where he served as an usher, Senior Choir member and a deacon. He was predeceased by his parents, Helen O. Fentress and James F. Fentress Sr. and his wife, Mary R. Watson. He is survived by two daughters, Synthia Miller of Norfolk and Sylvia Clark of Charlotte, N.C.; a son, James D. Fentress of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; a sister, Ophelia Lambert; a brother, Howard Fentress; a devoted friend, Mildred McGriff; and 15 grandchildren. A funeral will be held at noon Monday at Second Calvary Baptist Church by Geoffrey Gunns. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
