Furlong, passed away at his residence, 16 Randolph Street, at 6:15 o'clock yesterday evening, after an illness of one month, in the 53d year of his age. The deceased was born in St. John's, New Brunswick, but came to Norfolk twenty- eight years ago, where he has since resided and where he was well known and highly esteemed for his many excellent traits of character. He was a charter member of the Cotton Screwmen's Association, of Norfolk, and was for years actively identified with its every interest. He was also a member of the Norfolk Fire Department and Norfolk Aerie of Eagles. He is survived by a widow, one son, three daughters and four sisters. The funeral, for which arrangements are being made, will be announced later. ***************************************************************************** The obsequies of the late James P. Furlong, a member of the Norfolk Fire Department, were held from the Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 10 o'clock a.m. yesterday and were numerously attended, including delegates from the fire department, the Eagles, Emeralds, Hibernians and Cotton Screwmen's Association. Rev. Father R.A. Drake conducted the services and as the casket was borne from the church, Mrs. James Hughes rendered "Lead Kindly Light." There was a profusion of lovely floral tributes, two very handsome designs from the fire department, a large Maltese Cross from his company and a magnificent "Gates Ajar" from the entire fire department. The remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's Cemetery and the pallbearers were as follows: Captain R.F. McLaughlin, Robert Foster, James E. Prince, John W. Cashin, M. McKevitt, John Donnelly, Lawrence Kelly and John F. Lawler.
