                      J. A. FURLONG, FIREMAN, DIES

        Funeral Services for Veteran Member of Division Tomorrow Afternoon

Joseph Alexander Furlong, a member of the Norfolk fire division for more than 28 
years, died yesterday afternoon at 2:25 o'clock at a local hospital. He was 51 
years old.
Mr. Furlong was the husband of Mrs. Lela B. Furlong and son of Mrs. Julia 
Furlong Dyer and the late William J. Furlong. He was a native and lifelong 
resident of Norfolk and resided at 39 Port View Avenue, Ocean View, at the time 
of his death. 
Mr. Furlong served in many companies and capacities in the fire division and had 
a spotless record, division officials said. He was a member of the Firemen's 
Band and of Elizabeth Camp 3 Woodmen of the World. 
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. E.N. Kelly and Mrs. 
Lawrence L. Nunn, both of Norfolk; two sons, Joseph A. Furlong, Jr., of the West 
Coast and Charles E. Hill, of Norfolk; three grandchildren; his mother, Mrs. 
Julia Furlong Dyer; his step-father, Michael Dyer and three aunts, Mrs. Agnes 
Brennan, Mrs. Theresa Heppel and Mrs. James G. Hogwood, all of Norfolk.
Funeral services will be conducted at the chapel of the H.D. Oliver Funeral 
Apartments, 1501 Colonial Avenue, tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Burial 
will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Rosary services will be held at the home of Mr. 
Furlong's mother, Mrs. Dyer, 33 D View Avenue, Ocean View, tonight at 7:30 
o'clock.
