Furr, Norfolk Life Insurance Counselor Carlton H. Furr of 1418 Graydon Place, retired Norfolk general agent and life insurance counselor for Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co., Philadelphia, died Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in a hospital. A native of Loudoun County, he was the husband of Mrs. Marion Carter Furr and a son of John William and Mrs. Mary Frazier Furr. He lived here 60 years. He came here in 1909 and became special agent for Providential Mutual. He was promoted to general agent in 1909 and held this position until retirement in 1955. He was first agent in Norfolk to write a total of $1 million of life insurance. He was a former director of National Life Underwriters Association of the United States, president of General Agents Association of Provident Mutual and president of Norfolk-Portsmouth Life Underwriters Association. He was a charter member of Princess Anne Country Club, a member and former vestryman of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, a member and former director of Norfolk Yacht County Club and Virginia Club, a member of Mallory Country Club and former member of German Club. Surviving besides his widow, are two sons, Carlton H. Furr Jr. of Galveston, Tex. and Carter Branham Snow Furr of Norfolk; five brothers, Herman Furr of Norfolk, Lester Furr of Decatur, Ga., William Furr of Bowling Green, Blakley Furr of Loudoun County and Guy L. Furr of Roanoke; and three sisters, Mrs. Joseph Kottinger of San Francisco, Mrs. Edward Dishman of Warrenton and Mrs. Gerald Morgan of Hyattsville, Md. The body will be taken from H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church for a funeral service Friday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Roger C. Snyder. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. The family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church or King's Daughters Children's Hospital.
