She was born in Norfolk, Virginia on January 8, 1937 and shortly thereafter moved to New Orleans, Louisiana. She was the daughter of William Ernest McCardell and Mary Adelia Atkinson McCardell. She graduated from the Sacred Heart Academy, New Orleans, Louisiana in 1954. She attended Mary Washington College and Tulane University. She returned to Norfolk in 1958 upon her father's retirement from the United States Maritime Administration. In 1960, she married John Happer Furr, M.D. During her life she served on various boards and volunteer organizations. She was president of St. Mary's Infant Home and was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She served on the flower guilds of Sacred Heart Church and the Chrysler Museum of Art. She was an active member of the Garden Club of Norfolk, the Garden Club of Virginia and the Garden Club of America. She was a member of the Ruth Sargeant Circle of the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters, the Junior League of Norfolk, and the Women's Auxiliary of the Norfolk Academy of Medicine. She was a devoted wife, mother and Grandmother and especially enjoyed following her grandchildren's athletic and artistic activities. She is survived by her husband of 51 years John Happer Furr and their children: Mary Eugenia (Jeanie) Daniel and her husband William Scott Daniel; John Happer Furr, Jr.; William McCardell Furr and his wife Margaret Kyle Tabor Furr; Rosa Lee Furr; and Adelia (Dee Dee) Atkinson Gregoire and her husband Paul Henri Gregoire and eight grandchildren: Mary and Will Daniel; Margaret, Tabor and Jack Furr; and John, Catherine and Leah Gregoire. She is also survived by her brother William Ernest McCardell, Jr. and his wife Ann Yancey McCardell, her sister-in-law Elizabeth Huffington Furr, her nieces Elizabeth Furr Johnson and Anne Furr Huffman, and her nephew William Thomas McCardell. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 2, 2012 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Norfolk. A luncheon will follow at 1216 W. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk. The family is receiving visitors at 1216 W. Princess Anne Rd., Norfolk.
