Al was an "All Star Player" in both football and baseball in the Norfolk Community Leagues. He was presented with a cherished trophy by Miss Playground of 1962 for winning the Norfolk Recreation Department Soap Box Derby. Upon graduation from Maury, Al worked for Norfolk City Schools as an electrician and was later accepted into an apprenticeship program at the U. S. Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, VA., joining the Civil Service unit of the U.S. Navy in 1969. Al received numerous awards, recognitions and commendations starting with a 1971 "ZERO DEFECTS RECOGNITION" commendation in his second year as an apprentice, along with his colleague, a "Helper Electrician" on "a large, complicated job installing new equipment and cables to enhance the performance of existing equipment with over 13,608 electrical connections energized without one mistake or wrong connection in the entire job." Demonstrating Al's life-long attention to detail and consistent work ethic - a trait Al kept applying during his entire service to the U.S. defense forces. Al was further recognized, including the: "Value Engineering Award for Individual Achievement," as part of the "U.S. Navy's Action'88 Excellence Awards" in March, 1988, awarded by the Honorable Everett Pyatt, Undersecretary of the Navy for Shipbuilding and Logistics. This significant award was given in recognition of the improvements to internal navigation systems installed in aircraft carriers that Al designed and implemented, resulting in net cost savings in the millions of dollars for the U.S. Navy Surface Inertial Navigation Systems Branch under the Combat Systems Support Divisions. Al retired with Recognition and Appreciation after more than thirty-five (35) years from the Program Executive Office of Integrated Warfare Systems (IWS) and Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center (SPAWAR), Charleston, SC. Al enjoyed dancing, karaoke and his small watercraft that he kept in Lynnhaven Shores, where he lived for many years. The family wishes to also express their deepest appreciation to the professional caring staff and leadership at The Memory Center, Old Donation Road, Virginia Beach, VA, for the care given to their brother over the past five years and to the clinical teams from the Eastern Virginia Medical School Department of Medicine and the Gleenan Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology.
