Gambardella, faithful and loving husband for 57 years, of Marjorie Felton Gambardella, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, in Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital. Born Sept. 11, 1917, in Portsmouth, he was the son of the late Matteo and Josephine Gambardella. He is survived by his son, Ronald M. Gambardella and his wife, Peggy, of Virginia Beach and was father of the late Herbert A. Gambardella, Jr. and his wife, Anita Gambardella. Also surviving is his brother, Matteo Gambardella of Norfolk; his grandchildren, David Gambardella and Angela Gambardella; and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Gambaradella was also preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Storino and Rose Cogliandro, and brothers, Danny and Joe Gambardella. Herbie "Gambo" Gambardella was raised in the Colonial Place section of Norfolk and was a graduate of Maury High School. As a young man he excelled as an amateur boxer, winning the Virginia AAU lightweight championship before entering the U.S. Army during World War II. He attended OCS and was later assigned to the West Point Military Academy as a field instructor. Upon his discharge, Mr. Gambardella was employed by the U.S. Post Office and retired in 1977 after 30 years of service as a postman in Norfolk's Ghent section. He was also retired as a chief warrant officer in the Virginia Army National Guard. Active in his community all his life, Mr. Gambardella coached football at Holy Trinity High School, winning a city league championship. He also coached girls basketball at Christ the King Elementary School, and many other youth league teams in baseball and football. He was also president of the PTA at St. Mary's Academy during the 1950s, a member of the Norfolk Sports Club, The Knights of Columbus, Lake Wright Golf Club, and St. Gregory the Great Catholic parish where he served as an usher. Herbie will be missed and loved by his family and all who knew him. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at noon today at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by Father Anselm Ober.
