Southern Argus, February 4, 1857
The Late John S. Gamble.-A writer in the Richmond WHIG is speaking of the 
death of Mr. Gamble, late principal of the Norfolk Academy says:

"A distinguished graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, in which he had 
discharged with great credit the duty of an Assistant Professor, a ripe 
scholar, and a most successful teacher. A career of usefulness and distinction 
was opening before him, enjoyd by few young men of his age. With warm 
affection and most modest and unobtrusive manners, he never failed to awaken 
the cordial respect of all who knew him, and a void has been left by his death 
which can scarcely be filled.

It is an impressive commentary on the uncertainty of life; that the writer of 
this tribure to the memory of a friend, was about to answer a letter which he 
had just received from him dated 29th Dec., when the news came that he was 
dead! It is probably the last letter he ever wrote. It now lies before him. 
The life-like picture of the mind that found expression in the happy and 
appropriate style, in which he always wrote. And it is a pleasing thought, 
that its chief topic was the Religion of the Bible as exhibited by two works 
which he had recently read, "The Bible and Men of Learning," by Dr. Mathews, 
and "The Genius of Christianity" by Chateaubriand. Separated as he was, from 
the tender care of father and mother, may he have found in him "that sticketh 
closer than a brother" the peace and comfort which the Spirit of Christianity 
can alone give in the hour of trial."
