Bob was a native of Eastwood, N.Y. and was a son of the late John and Grace Auringer Gantley. He was preceded in death by his brother, William. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy Sept. 3, 1942. Over his career Bob, served on the USS Brandt, Shenandoah, Intrepid and Enterprise. In 1944, he returned from his European deployment sailing from Scotland on the Queen Elizabeth. Bob left the Navy in 1948, and joined the Navy Reserve. While attending Ohio State University, Bob met and married his wife Dorothy in 1950. He was recalled into the Navy in 1950 for the Korean War. He was stationed in London, England from 1953-1955. His duty stations over the years in the United States included Newport, R.I., San Diego, San Francisco, and Norfolk. In 1960, Bob was advanced to the rate of master chief, and he retired from the Navy in 1967 after 23 years of service. He often remarked "The Navy has been good to me." Bob served in the federal civil service program as a computer operator from 1967 until his retirement in 1980. He volunteered for 12 years at the Sewell's Point Navy Pharmacy. Bob was an avid reader, loved to travel and take the family camping. He was a 54-year member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and its Men's Club. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association No. 60 and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. He is survived by his loving wife of 59½ years, Dorothy; his daughters, Janet Stokley and Mary Gantley; his son, Michael and wife Barbara; son, Timothy and wife Veronica and sons, Dennis and Patrick. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Jillian Breitwieser, Megan Gantley, Nicole Gantley, Zane Surwilla and Christine Gantley; and one great-granddaughter, Marleigh Breitwieser; as well as two nephews. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church Tuesday, May 18, at 10 a.m. Burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the Norfolk Chapel of H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Monday from 7 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Trinity Missions, P.O.
