The Norfolk Virginian Pilot Monday March 9, 1953
William Thomas Gardner, 71, of 1421 Bainbridge Boulevard, South Norfolk, died 
in a nursing home yesterday at 6:40 a.m. after an illness of two years.
He was a native of Bertie County, N.C., but had lived in this area for the past 
three years. He was the son of the late William Henry and Mary Etta Gardner and 
the husband of Mrs. Ada Gardner.
Mr. Gardner was a member of the Raleigh Heights Baptist Church, South Norfolk.
Besides his wife, he is survived by one son, William Thomas Gardner, Jr., of 
Norfolk; one sister, Miss Kula Gardner of Princess Anne County; three 
stepdaughters, Mrs. Raymond Williams, Indian River Park, Mrs. Ester Deal, of 
Chicago, and Mrs. Thomas Newburn, of Norfolk; and two stepsons, Jesse J. Butt, 
of Fentress, and Wilbur W. Butt, of Great Bridge.
The body was removed to the Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, South Norfolk, where 
funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. Burial will be in 
Magnolia Cemetery.
