He departed this life on Sunday, February 5, 2012, at Churchland House in Portsmouth, VA. He was educated in Alabama and moved to Norfolk, Virginia in the early 1940s. He joined the U.S. Army and is a veteran of World War II. After the war, he worked for the Civil Service. In the 1960s, he was one of the first of four African-Americans to be inducted as a Deep Sea Checker into Local 1624 of the International Longshoreman's Association, for which he worked for over 25 years until his retirement in 1991. He was predeceased in 1959 by his daughter, Earlynn Dale Gardner, in 2008 by his wife, Dorothy Davis Gardner, of 61 years, and in 2009 by his son, Gerald Brent Gardner. He is survived by nine sons and daughters: Earl Ward of Baltimore, MD, Randall Gardner (Aldena), Gregory Gardner, Sandra Gardner Kelly, Dwayne Gardner, Kathy Gardner Williams (Leon), Beatrice Gardner Hinton, Dorothy Elouise Gardner Franks (Marvin), Barry Gardner (Ayanna), a first cousin, Annie Brooks; in-laws, Annie Hill Gardner, Pamela Simpson Clarke, Evelyn Davis Glover and Estella Williams Joyner, all of the Hampton Roads area; and 49 grand- and great-grandchildren. A funeral service will take place on Wednesday, February 8, 11 a.m. at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, 934 W. Little Creek Rd, Norfolk. There will be a viewing on Tuesday, February 7 from 3-8 p.m. at Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St., Norfolk. Interment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk following the service.
