Norfolk - Miss Leaony Idaliah Garland of 733 Avenue C, Norfolk, teacher at Jacox
Junior High School, died in a Norfolk hospital Thursday, Oct. 2, at 10 p.m. She
had been ill for some time, and was a hospital patient two months. She taught in
the Norfolk school system 36 years.

Miss Garland was for a time a member of the staff at Armstrong school and Laura
E. Titus school. During the past year, she was a member of the staff of Jacox
Junior High School. She taught until the end of the 1957-58 school term but was
not able to resume her work this year due to illness.

Miss Garland was a native of Danville,VA, and was the daughter of the late John
and Mrs. Catherine Garland. She received her early education in the Norfolk
public schools. She was a graduate of Norfolk Mission College and later received
the bachelor of science degree from Hampton Institute, and master of arts degree
from Columbia University.

She was an active member of Bank Street Baptist Church. She was a member of the
Norfolk Teachers Association and the Virginia Teachers Association.

Miss Garland was the sister of William Garland, a well known letter carrier.

The body lay in state at King funeral home Sunday. Funeral services were held at
Bank Street Baptist Church on Monday at 3 p.m. with the pastor, Dr. J. B.
Henderson, officiating.

Besides her brother, Miss Garland is survived by one aunt, several cousins and
other relatives.

Burial was in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery.
