Virginian-Pilot, The (Norfolk, VA) - Tuesday, July 21, 1998 
Wallace Garner, 73, of the 6800 block of Glenoak Drive, died Friday, July
17,1998, in a local hospital.

He was a native of Norfolk, and a veteran of the United States Army. He retired
from the Naval Supply Center in 1982 after 39 years of service.

Mr. Garner was a faithful member of St. John's A.M.E. Church where he was a
member of the Board of Stewards, an associate member of the Nannie C. Phelps
Women's Missionary Society, a member of the Douglas-Studivant Sunday School
Class, Berean Bible Class, Wednesday Night Prayer Service, and Chaplain of the
Coronado-Inglenook Civic League and Chaplain of the Lay Organization. He was the
past president of the Chesapeake Fellowship group, and a past member of the
Stewardship and Finance Commission.

Mr. Garner is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Mildred C. Garner of
Norfolk; one daughter, Juanita Garner of Hampton; one son, Anthony Garner of
Hampton; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and a host of
relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at noon in St. John's A.M.E.
Church, Norfolk, by Presiding Elder I.W. Knight Sr. and a host pastor, the Rev.
Larry S. Hinton. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Viewing will be today from
10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Pretlow and Sons Funeral Home, Chesapeake. The family will
receive friends at their residence. In lieu of flowers, the family requests
donations be made to the Mortgage Fund of St. John's A.M.E. Church.
