Thomas Garnette, 69, of the 5400 block of Tidewater Drive, entered into eternal rest July 27, 1999. Dr. Garnette, a native of Norfolk, was the son of the late Booker Sumner Garnette and Willie Mae Davidson Wiley. He received his early education in the public schools of Norfolk. He received his bachelor of science degree in zoology from Howard University, Washington, D.C., and doctor of dental surgery degree from Howard University, School of Dentistry. Dr. Garnette served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy where he practiced dentistry. After retiring from active duty, he practiced dentistry in Norfolk for 37 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute St., where he was a member of the Male Chorus. He was also a member of Masonic Campbell Lodge No. 67, a former member of Bachelor Benedict Social Club and the Tux Club, and a member of the Lambda Omega Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. He served Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. as Past Basileus; third district representative; a member of the Supreme Council; Omega Man of the Year, 1977, Lambda Omega Chapter and Third District; past member of the National Public Relations Committee; past member of the National Life Membership Committee; and several other local, regional and national committees. Dr. Garnette served Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. with dignity and distinction for more than 50 years. He leaves to cherish his beautiful memory his daughter, Donna Garnette Alexander; a son-in-law, Winston T. Alexander Jr.; a grandson, Ryan Garnette Alexander; three brothers, Joseph Garnette, Robert Garnette and Raymond Garnette; two sisters, Muriel White and Ava Simmons; a nephew, Michael C. Wiley; a great-nephew, Michael C. Wiley Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends. The family will assemble and receive friends at 5435 Sandpiper Lane, Norfolk. Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Riddick Funeral Service. The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Sunday at First Baptist Church, 418 E. Bute St., Norfolk. A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the church by the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
