Norfolk Virginian May 5, 1896

Mr. George H. Garrett, a well-known and highly esteemed citizen, died at the 
residence of Mr. N.P. Tatem, on First street, Sunday night, at 9 o'clock, after 
a lingering illness of several months.
Mr. Garrett was formerly of Portsmouth, N.H., but came to this town several 
years ago in search of health.  He married Miss Eleanor Cherry just prior to 
locating here, who, with two children, survive him.  He was about 40 years of 
age and had been employed as a bookkeeper while here when his health would 
permit.  His funeral will take place Wednesday afternoon at 5 o'clock from his 
late residence.

Mr. Geo. H. Garrett passed into rest on Sunday at the residence of Mr. N.P. 
Tatem on First street.  The deceased had been an invalid for some years.  He 
leaves a wife and two children.  The funeral takes place this evening at 5 
o'clock.
                             
New Daily Pilot May 6, 1896

The funeral of Mr. Geo. H. Garrett took place yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock 
and was largely attended by relatives and friends.  The services were conducted 
by Rev. Robt. Gatewood, of St. Paul's P.E. Church, assisted by Rev. M.W. Butler, 
of Main Street Christian Church.  The interment took place in Magnolia Cemetery.  
The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers:  Judge Wm. N. Portlock, Dr. Geo. 
W. Wallace, Hon,. A.E. Hurbut, J.F. Tatem, Prof. J.W. Roberts, Geo H. Frey, 
Leland Boush and Abner Tatem.
