Norfolk Virginian September 11, 1896  

Mr. John Garrett died at his residence, foot of Mulberry street, yesterday 
afternoon at 5:30 o'clock, after a lingering illness of seven weeks.  The 
deceased leaves a wife and two small children to mourn his loss.  The funeral 
will take place this afternoon from the residence at 4:30 o'clock.  Friends and 
acquaintances are respectfully invited to attend.

The funeral of Mr. John Garrett took place yesterday afternoon from his late 
residence, foot of Mulberry street, and was conducted by Rev. R.M. Candler.  
Interment was made in Magnolia Cemetery.
