Bessie Payton Garrett of the 900 block of Round Bay Road, a retired teacher,
died June 14, 1995, in Norfolk.

Mrs. Garrett was born in Norfolk and was the widow of William Garrett. She was
retired from the City of New York. She was a member of First Baptist Church,
Bute Street and the American Federation of Teachers. A graduate of Norfolk State
College and North Carolina Central University, she did further study at Brooklyn
College in New York and Old Dominion University.

Bessie taught for a number of years in St. Croix in the Virgin Islands. While
there, she organized and taught the first majorette corps of girls in St. Croix.

Survivors include three sisters, her twin, Betty P. Harris of Virginia Beach,
Barbara P. King of Olney, Md., and Jean P. Braxton of Norfolk; a brother, Willie
L. Payton of Virginia Beach; an aunt, Madeline Claude of New York; nieces,
nephews, numerous cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her parents,
Bessie J. and Allie L. Payton and her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. James Joyner
and Mr. and Mrs. Willie Payton.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday in First Baptist Church Bute
Street, Norfolk, by the Rev. Robert Murray. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery .
The family will be at 1024 Dulcie Ave., Virginia Beach. The body will be placed
in the church at noon Saturday. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
