Garrity, aged 88, passed away peacefully, surrounded by loving friends on 21 February 2025. Henry was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Taylor Garrity, in 2003. Henry lived in Norfolk, Virginia, and was born on February 10th, 1937, in Waterbury, Connecticut. He attended The Taft School and later Yale University and Middlebury College where he earned an M.A. and held a Fullbright in France. He later attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, earning his PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures. He had many adoring students over his teaching careers at The Taft School, Saint Lawrence University, and Bowling Green State University, where he served as the Chair of the Department of Romance Languages. During his time in Ohio, Henry was involved in developing international film festivals and bringing in famous French filmmakers. He was passionate about opera, film, art, French, and travel. He travelled the world and served on the Board of the Virginia Opera for many years. His activities in the opera were wide-ranging and he hosted many opera singers at his home over the years. He loved his friends dearly and sought out interesting places and gastronomical pleasures over his incredible life. He was an active member of the Alliance Française of Norfolk and returned frequently to France, even serving as guest lecturer for abroad courses from time to time. His memory will live on in the many passions, places and people he touched. A service was held at 11am on Monday, March 10, 2025, at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to either the Norfolk chapter of the Alliance Française or the Chrysler Museum.
