Norfolk - John Joseph Gaskin, 91, passed away May 16, 2017. He was preceded in 
death by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis Brewer Gaskin; son, Paul Stephen Gaskin 
and second wife, Louise McCroy Gaskin. He is survived by his daughter, Susan 
Haden and her husband, Dwight; three grandchildren, James, Sarah and Alex; 
daughter-in-law, Tonie Gaskin and her son, Stephen; two great-grandchildren and 
a host of loving family and friends. John attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Class 
of 1948, received a degree from the Institut Catholique de Paris in philosophy 
and studied mathematics and philosophy at St. Catherine's College, Oxford. He 
served in the Coast Guard aboard the USCGC Campbell and went on to work for 
I.B.M. until his retirement. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2 pm 
Tuesday, June 6th, at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church, 2700 Dolfield 
Drive, Richmond, Va. Inurnment will be held 12 noon on Wednesday, June 7th in 
Elmwood Cemetery, 238 E. Princess Ann Rd., Norfolk, VA 23510.
