William E. "Bill" Gatewood, 53, a familiar old timer among the marine and aviation enthusiasts in this area, died in the Norfolk Marine Hospital Sunday at 8:30 p.m. A one-time winner of the President's Cup, Capt. Gatewood spent most of his life with boats and airplanes. In addition to his work as skipper of freight, excursion and speed craft, he was known for his work with the Civil Air Patrol. He was a major in Squadron No. 1 and he also served on the wing advisory staff of Civil Defense for Virginia. Won Cup in 1937 Captain Gatewood won the President's Cup in 1937 when he raced in Miss Manteo II. A native of Portsmouth, the captain came from a family of boat lovers. His parents, Capt. R.W. Gatewood, veteran mariner and Mrs. Eularia M. Gooding Gatewood, both survive him. Captain Gatewood lived most of his life in Norfolk, making his home on the Ingleside waterfront. His father started Captain Gatewood's working with boats. He was associated with his father in excursion activities for many years, beginning in 1924. He recalled many times that these trips were chiefly to Jamestown, Yorktown, Suffolk and Richmond. Owned 3 Boats In 1933 the Gatewoods owned three excursion boats, the Mayflower, the Marguerite and the Severn. In 1951 the father and son took up the excursion business again for some cruises to Jamestown Island on the Tolchester. The younger Captain Gatewood took up flying after 1937 and made many flights up and down the Virginia and North Carolina coasts. Captain Gatewood's water activities also included the operation of two yachts for charter. One of these, the 110-foot Robin, once belonged to heiress Barbara Hutton. The other was named the Romar.
