Mr. Hill officiating in the absence of the pastor, the Rev. R. H. Bowling. Mr. Gatling’s death occurred while he was making his usual deliveries of freight shipments for the Hampton Roads Transfer Co., his employers, to merchants on Church street. He was a native of Norfolk, born April 16,1876, the son of Nelson Thomas and Mrs. Lovitt Anne Gatling and had been a member of the church from which he was buried for over 40 years. He had spent many years in such occupation as he was following at the time of death and had been with his last employers since 1930. Mr. Gatling could have been retired on a Social Security pension, but chose to continue to perform his regular work instead of taking advantage of the leisure he had justly earned. Speaking of him, D. B. McLeod, partner of the Hampton Roads Transfer Co. said, “He was loved and respected by young and old, and his influence and experienced knowledge of his work will leave a vacancy unfilled.” Mr. Gatling was a member of the Sons of Norfolk Fraternal and Beneficial Association, Royal Arch Masons, Buffaloes, Shriners and the Waldorfs. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sadie E. Gatling; two daughters, Miss Rebecca Gatling and Mrs. Janie Morris, Norfolk; four sons, Selden R., and John H. Jr., of Baltimore MD; George R. of Philadelphia, and Edward Gatling, who is in the U. S. Navy; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. Mary Gatling of Baltimore and Mrs. Madeline Gatling of New York, and four grandchildren.
