Mr. S. A. Piercy, of 216 Granville avenue, Brambleton, heard the shot and went to investigate, finding the man dead with blood coming from the wound. The revolver was lying beside him and a note, written in Italian, was in his hand. Dr. E. P. Odend'hal, city coroner, was notified, and took charge of the body, having it removed to the morgue on Church street, where an inquest was held in the afternoon and a verdict brought in according to the above facts. The suicide lived on Chapel street and worked for Frank Corelli, a shoemaker near the corner of Granby and Charlotte streets. Corelli knew no reason why Gatto should have killed himself except that he had been drinking for several days and may have been despondent. He had not worked for several days. He was liked by his employer and others who knew him. A brother of Charlie, also a shoemaker, has a shop in Portsmouth. The Italian Society of Norfolk and Portsmouth took charge of the body and will give it a decent burial. The note found in the dead man's hand was in blue paper, in red ink, and was a farewell to his friends. It began: "My Dear Friends." In the body of the letter, he stated that he had been thinking of committing suicide since '56. There was nothing bitter in the letter, but it was rather tender in its tone, asking forgiveness of any whom he may have offended. He signs himself, Giacomo Gatto, a Piedmontese, a native of Vercelli.
