Mrs. Mary Nancy Gay, 86, widow of Carter Gay, died at 3 a.m. April 24, at 
her residence, 888 Johnson avenue.

She was a native of Halifax County, VA, and had been a resident of Norfolk 
for about 70 years.  She was an active member of First Baptist Church, Bute 
Street, for 50 years or more.  She was Past Grand Worthy Matron of the 
Courts of Calanthe of Virginia, and an active member of Virginia State 
Federation of Women’s Clubs for many years.  She was well-known in Norfolk 
for her work as a modiste in past years.

Surviving her are one daughter, Mrs. Hazel Washington of Baltimore, MD;  two 
grandchildren, Odie M. Gay and Mrs. Gladys Gay Woodard of Norfolk;  a 
daughter-in-law, Mrs. Janette I. Gay;  four great grandchildren and several 
nephews and nieces of South Boston, VA.

Funeral services will be held Saturday April 27, at 1 p.m. from First 
Baptist Church.  Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Hale’s Funeral Home 
in charge of arrangements.
