Born Jan. 4, 1925, in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Ethel Coleman and Elmo "Jack" Southworth Nickerson. She was a graduate of Norview High School, Norfolk. In 1943, she began a career with Bell Atlantic Telephone Co., retiring from Bell Atlantic in 1985. While continuing her career with Bell Atlantic, Dorothy met and married her husband, Victor Gerald Gedmin in 1951. She was a mother to their two children; she continued to be active in her church and she found time to laugh and sing with her family and friends. She accompanied her husband on his assignment in Europe for three exciting years and they developed a great love for travel. After her family, her greatest love was music. She was a pianist and a choir member for 35 years at St. Marks and OLGC Catholic Church in Fairfax. After relocating to Colington Harbour, Kill Devil Hills, N.C., she became an active member of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church where she founded the Adult Choir and was the director for many years. She also was actively involved with the Ladies of the Sea at Holy Redeemer and will be sorely missed by her parish community. Golf was another joy for her and she was a member of the Duck Woods Nine-Holers. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Victor Gerald Gedmin, of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; her son, Jeffrey Gedmin and his wife Jeana and their daughter, Katrina of Norman, Okla.; her sister, June Linton Crockett of Virginia Beach; her sister-in law, Claudia Nickerson of Norfolk; numerous nieces and nephews; and her caregiver who became a great friend and support, Sheila Hassell. Dorothy was predeceased by her parents; her parents- in-law; her son, Timothy Gedmin; her brother, William Nickerson; and sister-in-law, Shirley Gedmin. A memorial Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, Kitty Hawk, N.C. at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Association or any charity of your choice.
