An aviation pioneer, Mr. Geiger started his airline career with the Pennsylvania Central Airline in 1935. He later worked for Capitol Airlines, which later became United Airlines, from which he retired in 1977, as a management supervisor. He was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church where he was active in and the senior member of the St. Gregory Choir. He was also the original conductor of the St. Cecelia Choir at St. Gregory. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council Number 9056, the United Airlines Retiree Association, The Legion of Mary, the Commodore Chorus, the Benedictine Obleates and the St. Gregory's September Senior Citizens Club. He is survived by his wife, Patricia "Pat" Geiger; four daughters, Patricia M. Gustafson of Norfolk, E. Claire Geiger of Virginia Beach, Mildred M. Poole of Richmond, and Vivian G. Burgess and her husband, Vincent, of Midlothian; seven sons, James E. Geiger and his wife, Yvonne, of Vermilion, Ohio; Michael H. Geiger and his wife, Barbara, of Suffolk; Thomas D. Maynard of Sidney, Ohio; William David Maynard of Virginia Beach, Thomas R. Geiger and his wife, Rhonwyn, of Tallahassee, Fla.; Richard M. Maynard of Virginia Beach, and Joseph G. Maynard and his wife, Tammy, of Chesapeake. Survivors also include two sisters, Edith G. Sobal of Cannonsburg, Pa., and Irene G. Manning of Pittsburgh, Pa., as well as 23 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Mr. Geiger was preceded in death by his parents, John M. and Mary Z. Geiger and a sister, Anna Mae Geiger Moran. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Thursday, July 25, 1996, at 10 a.m. in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church by Father John Peck. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will receive friends at the church Wednesday from 7 to 9 p.m. with a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel, Virginia Beach, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory's Catholic School Education Fund or to a charity of choice.
