She was born October 3, 1926 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Donet Crowe Smith and Ann Constantineau Smith. She grew up in Northern Virginia and then resided in Norfolk for 65 years. Virginia lived a very memorable part of her childhood at Fort Meyer Army Base in Arlington, VA where she loved to ride horses with her father. It was there that she developed a lifelong passion for military pageantry and marching bands. She graduated from Holy Trinity High School and worked as a secretary at the Pentagon prior to marrying the love of her life, Frank McCourt Gerloff. Together, for 39 years, they fostered a Catholic faith filled marriage and family life for their seven children. Virginia was a devoted member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, in Norfolk where she was a choir member, cantor, Eucharistic minister, liturgy planner, and bible study leader during her 65 years of lay ministries. She had a special place in her heart for people in need. She visited nursing home residents and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was one of the founding members of The Haven in Ocean View, a community outreach home for the homeless. She worked for many years alongside her husband as the administrative assistant for the family business. She loved music, dolls, flower arranging, needlework, and making miniatures. Her children have fond memories of her ringing her hand bell on the front porch to gather them for beautifully home cooked meals. She loved her friends, affectionately known as the ya yas, but most of all, she loved God and her family. She is survived by her sister Barbara Kosko-Holmes of Cherokee, NC; children Chuck Gerloff (Linda) of Chesapeake, Donet Gerloff of Norfolk, Ann Margolius(Ralph) of Wytheville, Ellie Constantineau (Jeff) of Wrentham, MA, Therese Stansbury (Dave) of Poquoson, Frank Gerloff, Jr., of Mechanicsville, Joseph Gerloff (Cindy) of Norfolk; grandchildren Rachel Phelps, Carrie Beale, Joshua and Courtney Gerloff, Jenny Henika, Sarah Dovie, Justin Margolius, Cole, Beth, and Cammie Constantineau, Olivia and Isabella Stansbury, Nicole Ficor, Kelly Lirot, Cassie, Brittany, and Frank Gerloff,III, Hayden and Marshall Gerloff; great grandchildren Davis Phelps, Carter and Aubrie Beale, Penny Gerloff, Morgan and Matthew Henika, Sullivan, Brennen and McKenna Dovie, Sophie and Julien Constantineau, Lucas Bedard, Quinn Ficor, and Liam Sheroshick.
